WHEN SHOULD YOU BUILD AN AGENT?
1 min read
Not every repetitive job should be turned into an Agent.
A job that suits an Agent usually has more than one of the following traits.
1. The job comes up repeatedly
The same type of task is done many times.
2. There is a relatively stable method
A skilled practitioner usually knows:
- where to start;
- what to check;
- which data matters;
- when to stop;
- what the final result must contain.
3. It needs its own Context
The job depends on:
- internal documents;
- domain knowledge;
- your own standards;
- the methods of an individual or organization.
4. It needs Tools or structured data
An Agent suits the job better than a Chatbot when it frequently needs to:
- search;
- fetch data;
- read files;
- calculate;
- query systems;
- use APIs.
5. The cost of mistakes is high enough
The more important the job, the more the Agent needs:
- clear rules;
- verification;
- stopping conditions;
- sources;
- human review.
6. The output quality can be checked
There should be:
- a checklist;
- acceptance criteria;
- test cases;
- reference sources;
- real-world feedback.
Turn a job into an Agent when it is repeatable, follows a method, and its quality can be controlled.
